The lists have a lot of information overlap - read through them to become familiar.  Starting from scratch can be expensive, the short answer is about $250-300 dollars to get good quality materials that will grow with you.  Sharing costs of paint and paper with another painter can go a LONG way to reducing initial costs.  If you want to just try watercolor a 'little', consider renting a student kit for a beginner series (Chewelah painters, only, contact me about availability - ranges from $35 - $50 for approx. 6 weeks.)  A few good brushes, artist grade paints in a covered palette, Arches Bright White watercolor sheets with at least a plywood support board are the basic, more expensive requirements.

The "Exhaustive" list is a result of numerous questions about what I have in my kit or what I use in the studio.  It is exhaustive - i do not recommend you use this list if you are just starting out.  It also includes much more explanation and discussion about materials and setting up.  May be helpful if you are feeling overwhelmed and are wondering why some of these items are necessary or helpful! Refer to this list for the little extra add-ons you will want to have:  water containers, paper towels, etc.

If you are heading into Spokane Art Supply or shopping online for just the basics - see the Materials list for beginner list below.

If you are shopping online: www.cheapjoes.com,  www.blickarts.com, www.jerrysartarama.com, or www.utrecht.com - are all worth checking out as sales events are common.  I go for free/almost free shipping!

It is helpful to compile all your stuff into a rubber tote or a wheeled cart (what I do).  Be careful with your paper - it is a bit vulnerable, protect it from getting dinged, bent, or otherwise marred. Do NOT be lured into purchasing watercolor tablets or blocks.  The paper is usually a lot more expensive, and you are very limited to working with certain sizes and formats.  The paper on blocks is also NOT STRETCHED, it is only bound with adhesive (contrary to what you might expect!).  To protect and carry your WC paper,  2 large pieces of cardboard fashioned into a portfolio with duct tape is a great temporary tote.
