Paint This! Bold Strokes
This mini-workshop will expand on very specific (although basic) watercolor techniques to develop your landscape paintings from start to finish, smoothly and with control. The approach will support you through a range of projects, from painting in your studio with reference photos to handling quickly-changing atmospheric patterns when painting en plein air using only good paper, paint, and a few brushes. Of course, nothing is fool-proof, but it's much more fun wit a few things ironed out before you even begin!
Learn to mix the best consistency of paint for the technique at hand. Painting with grace and confidence is truly difficult for fresh painters; this workshop is designed to break down the components of a landscape painting using confident strokes which have been thought about (even practiced if necessary!) in advance, good for any painter at any level.
Clean, fresh, straightforward strokes with the right dilution of paint from a minimal palette can result in strong, tonal paintings of lights and darks with enough color and detail to tell the story. Avoid the headache of overworking and constant correction: see it, think about it, sketch SOME of it, paint it in logical sequence, and leave it alone. Washes, glazes, and calligraphy!
For painters with watercolor setups - you will likely have enough stuff. This approach doesn't call for masking fluid and other studio materials difficult to use in the field - it really is a simplified and elegant approach. A recent workshop I attended focused on this approach with a very basic Chinese brush setup - inexpensive and fun - you might want to try that (I loved it!). Fro fresh painters, you could try the basic Chinese brush set-up with a basic palette of colors - see the materials list. If you find watercolor IS your cup of tea, you can grow into more tools and materials as you go.
